We are not rich and not poor either, we have 1 computer which cannot be shared by all our kids. If they are going to do online learning, they each need their computer so we got it from the school. While we could afford to buy a chrome book, we do not see the need to buy one when the school is giving it out. We pay taxes just like everyone else.

I'm assuming that many who are working from home also use work laptops. Some of course might be using home laptops. But, it's hard to believe that people who can afford super expensive cars can't afford to go out and get an extra chromebook for $300.

PP, we don't know the circumstances or the reasons why people went and got Chromebooks. Nor do we need to. MCPS offered them for people to come and get, and people came and got them.

What part of this do you not understand? Everyone pays taxes and if that rich person in the 100K car does not have enough computers at home because they have kids in ES and didn't want them addicted to a screen, who are you to judge them for their choices? The bottom line is any kid who needs one will get it (does not matter if their parents are rich or poor).

that's neither here nor there. There are many students in MCPS that don't even have ONE computer in the house. If you don't absolutely need the chromebook, let some one who really needs it have it. Don't take it just because you're angry at the government.

I say this as a teacher - that some systems have MANY resources that actually go to waste.

There are plenty of parents with nice cars who have lost their jobs or been sent home for 2 or more weeks without any idea if their business is coming back -- dentists, hairdressers, orthodontists, restaurant owners, stock brokers, etc. A nice car has no relationship to current income, so please stop shaming!

I don't have a nice car, but my income has also disappeared. I have one very old laptop for myself for the little work I am able to maintain. My college DC has one laptop to maintain a link with university. There is no schedule for university classes, it varies week to week. I picked up a chrome book for my other DC. Stop shaming people about it. There will, undoubtedly, be assignments and classwork and really work among all three of us which will require us to be online all at once. Add to that all the time I spend online reading about COVID and figuring out testing, home sanitation, etc. so I can keep the people in my family who are sick with COVID from getting sicker and the people in my family who are well from getting sick.

I'm just so sick already of the shaming. You have no idea what people are dealing with. Illness, income loss, risk factors, etc.

MCPS is not asking for donations. That's a separate foundation with overhead costs and a paid director. Money given to them may or may not buy Chromebooks.

We have 2 kids but decided to leave the chrome books for those who really need it. Common sense

This is what I saw at the elementary school across the street.

Some parents want the chromebooks because they already have pretty strict controls on the websites that kids can access. I feel safer handing my kid a school chromebook than my old laptop which is unbearably slow when Norton Family or some other blocking software is turned on.
