Even if you were old and had an underlying condition? I suspect the priest had examined his conscience and his life many times before this decision. And, as a priest, had recently been to confession and made a good act of contrition, so he believed he was going to heaven - a much better place than earth, to put it mildly.
As usual, Catholic priests are much more in touch with the teachings of Jesus than evangelicals are. The Protestant types in this country are insane.
