I’m the OP. One of my Facebook friends from high school has been posting about the rapture non-stop since last week. He is enjoying watching these biblical prophecies in real time and is excited to see Jesus. He shared a post from Perry Stone Ministries - check out that page then read all the comments.

When he isn’t posting about the Rapture, he’s posting about the whole government conspiracy of Coronavirus. And people are agreeing with him.

It’s a fascinating look into the mindset of some people.

PP here, I looked it up and I apparently made up the traveling salesman thing in my head. The guy who popularized this stuff was a largely self-taught Bible student named Cyrus Scofield.

I think this is one of those things along the road to the end times-wars and rumors of wars, plagues, famine, earthquakes...but I think we'll KNOW when it's the end, and it's not there yet (and most likely not for a long long time, but only God knows).

Most Christians don’t believe in the rapture. It’s very much a fringe belief, like Jehova’s whiteness and blood transfusions.

If you know someone who grew up in a denomination that believed in the Rapture, ask if they ever had a Rapture scare when they thought they’d been left behind. (Mine was when I woke up from a nap and my parents were out in the tool shed and I couldn’t find them.) Pretty much everyone I know who grew up believing this had this type of scare and/or recurring nightmares.

Then there is Rapture-pranking. A common scenario is when a kid is sent on an errand of some type during youth group and everybody else leaves a pile of clothes on their chairs and then hides or leaves.

And then for a really deep dive:

Pre-tribulation people believe the rapture (taking up of “true Christians” to heaven) will happen before a 7-year period known as the Tribulation when the anti-Christ will rise, take over, and torment those who become Christians in the meantime. Allegiance to Antichrist in the form of the Mark of the Beast will be required to buy or sell. Eventually if you refuse it you’ll get executed (usually the method is public beheading in evangelical media) but it’s okay because you’ll go straight to heaven. If you accept it you’re destined for hell.

Mid-trib people think the rapture will happen halfway through the 7 years.

Post-trib people say sorry Christians, we’re ALL in for it, we don’t get to escape the persecution and torment so buckle up.

For obvious reasons, pre-Trib is the most popular take.

I’m Episcopalian now, and look forward to NOT traumatizing my children with this trash, most of which was invented by a mid-1800s traveling salesman if I recall correctly.

Oh, I thought this was the apocalypse.

If you see the White Horseman going overhead, then it's the end of days. That's the first of the four horsemen. And he's the one bringing disease before the next brings war. Just look up four horsemen of the apocalypse. I'm keeping an eye on that angle.
