I keep thinking back to when most of the world was agricultural and much of the learning kids were supposed to do also helped their family make a living (farm chores and stuff). I keep thinking back to an anthropologist who wrote about how parents in many cultures don't really play with their kids. They interact with other adults and have kids watch and learn adult skills (https://letgrow.org/you-dont-have-to-play-with-your-kids-qa-with-anthropologist-david-lancy/). Wish there was some way we could bring that model forward into the modern world a little bit.

Am not sure how useful it would be to bring my 10yo on a tech call where we walk through data variable layouts, tho ...

Yes, it’s overwhelming. And I’m a SAH who always does “extracurricular” educational stuff with my kids even when school is in session. But just too many suggestions all at once.

No, I know what to do already with my kids and my life, and it’s none of these things.

You seem really insecure, OP.

Ok? And so what if I’m insecure?

I’ve never homeschooled my kids before and want to do a good job. I’m an expert in my field and not used to half-assing things.

preschool is sending daily videos, teachers reading books, showing how to do simple activities and crafts.
it's awesome for my 4 year old. short attention span but gives him purpose and gets him excited. also, i don't have to do much other than get him some materials.

That's ungenerous.

I'm telling you so that you'll know, because it seems you didn't already.

PP you replied to. I have no problem being hated. Sometimes it takes one person to tell the unvarnished truth.

I’m trying to work remotely and parent three kids, including a toddler. Now I feel like I’m not maximizing the opportunities. Maybe I need to set aside planning time each night?

YES!! I don't know who has time to do all these things with their kids. Mine are 4 and 22 months. The 4 year old is not just going to sit there and learn. I have to work and the house is getting messier, the dishes are pilling up, kids running around and who has time to do that 30 day lego crap?

This, exactly.

We all liked the zoo safaris so far. They were short enough that I could watch, too. My kids (4&7) found the first Mo Willems boring (too long for me to watch). They're both doing the Scholastic module every day. Other than that, we are winging it. I'm trying to stay off social media because seeing the lists and activities stresses me out, but I have to work, so it is what it is.

I think the “day 1 of homeschooling”, “day 2 of homeschooling” posts and pics on social media will die down soon once the novelty wears off. Then they’ll revert to screen time and whatever else keeps them occupied just like what a lot of us are doing now. They just won’t post or take pics of it, unless it’s a “the kids have been working SO hard that they needed a break, so we’re all taking time to relax!” post.

I guess I haven’t been part of this. I feel sort of free to not have our many normal obligations during the school week.

I took vacation this week to get on some sort of schedule. As pp said, kids have been doing schoolwork for a couple of hours in the morning, playing in the afternoon, then doing a few chores and watching TV in the evening. My kids in fourth grade and older are emailed their assignments, and they turn them into their teachers.

Hopefully we will get into some sort of routine by next week.

The Cincinnati zoo thing is REALLY cool.
So is mo Willems.

I couldn’t get this to work. Nothing ever happened unless I viewed their non-live videos. Did anyone else have this problem?
My younger one loved the Mo Willems video.
