Gotta say OP, this post makes very little sense. Work with the school admin if you truly have a serious underlying condition. At the same time, many people are making significant sacrifices and are taking health risks. Some people are still working. I still have to work. Some friends in intelligence still have to work.

WIS parent here. How can posting on this board help when you haven't even contacted admin? Please do so and do take care of yourself. From the HOD's timely communications, the school appears to be aware of the public health risks.

WIS parent here. How can posting on this board help when you haven't even contacted admin? Please do so and do take care of yourself. From the HOD's timely communications, the school appears to be aware of the public health risks.

In WA state, where things are insane, at one independent school the teachers who can't teach online (PE, drama) are required to come in to tutor and support boarding students. So this all sucks, for sure.

If you are going in for virtual meetings can you not bring some wipes, walk from your car into the building - likely seeing no one, sit in your room after you wipe down the main surfaces, and then go home? There is nothing there now that wasn’t there when you were in with the kids.

All the meetings are by Skype. If they don’t see my classroom behind me, they will charge me sick leave.


Set your Skype background as Hogwarts - Zoom has this option. When you’re on the Skype call, say you can’t figure out how to change it back - oh well!

OP, don't overthink it. Just take sick leave and don't give it a second thought. If you end using more leave later then it is what it is. Just breathe and solve the problem in front of you now. Don't worry about what might happen down the road.

Distance learning is important, but if you have health issues that is more important. The school should work with you to plan this remotely. I can't believe they are having faculty AND their kids come in at this point. I predict that as soon as the testing ramps up in the coming week, we are going to see that COVID is everywhere in DC.


I know, right? It’s just so hard to balance the risk of getting sick now and the risk of getting sick (with anything) later and figure out which is more responsible use of limited sick leave. And it’s hard to feel like I am the only one trying to be responsible when epidemics like this prove that our actions impact others!
