I don’t think that is correct. Non-profits aren’t required to pay unemployment taxes, but if they don’t, they must provide payment for actual claims by their workers. Either way, an employee of a non-profit remain covered.

There may be slightly different rules for employees of religious institutions, but that could be defined narrowly and might not cover a daycare worker, even at a church based center.

I work for a church based center. Non profits are not required to pay unemployment insurance, so if we are let go, we will not receive unemployment pay.

Unemployment only provides 50-75% of income. You’re talking about people who are already living paycheck to paycheck. In all reality, they could end up homeless.

The honest centers will do this, if not now then next month. They are not going to get people to pay for closed daycare for months on end.

They're giving us a break on tuition, but only to the extent that they can keep paying the staff. I'm ok with that.

My center is not going to pay its staff so I will be requesting a stop in payment. I’m not worried about my spot if they say I will lose it in the mean time and need to re-apply. Not sure how this will all pan out.

Sure, they say they'll pay staff … but that will first mean only salaried teachers. Hourly employees are going to be quickly cut (ours has already been looking to slim down as the numbers dwindled). Then daycares will pay the salaried teachers/employees as long as enough tuition comes in to cover the rent/mortgage and salaries, but as I think we all know, the parents are not going to continue paying for extended closure times. Revenues will shrink, and no, the daycares will not be paying the teachers for not working indefinitely.

We go to Kindercare Penn Quarter and the Director told me today they would be paying staff if they opt out to stay home or if the center closes.

My sons teacher said they are required to pay them so they are not worried about that at this point. They are worried about their own health which is understandable. If we shouldn't be in groups of 10 certainly the daycares should close as well. This puts me in an awful position like most with still having to work but its the right thing to do. I feel bad for them.

I hope to god the chain centers do, but I have a sinking feeling they won’t. My kids go to a non-profit and the staff will be paid. And I’m glad because they are like family.

I know mine will. For one thing, it’s open but staff was given the option of taking leave if they don’t feel comfortable going in.

I work at a large center in Falls Church. We will at least be paid for the first month of the closure. If we aren’t paid after that, my mortgage won’t be paid. I make in the 35k range.
