Subject: Nationwide visitation ban at care homes due to virus fears
My mom is in a rehab facility and they have instituted this ban.
As an aside, a few weeks ago she got the flu from the nurses there who were coming to work sick. I hope that they are screening the nurses in addition to banning visitors.

Some nursing homes have already done this, the one my mom is at in the south. I totally think it's necessary at this point; too many people who will refuse to self isolate and have the potential to infect an entire nursing home.

We are in the process of moving my mom into an ALF now. I'm glad she isn't there already. The idea of not having anyone be able to visit is really scary given how crappy most of these facilities are. My mom is in Manhattan. I assume most of the people who work there are taking subway or bus to work - seems like the marginal extra risk of visitors might be worth it given the benefits.

So, Trump has recommended that nursing homes suspend all medically unnecessarily visitation. It is hard to imagine that nursing homes are going to do anything else but suspend visitation.

My dad has dementia with agitated paranoid - he can’t use a phone but needs family to calm his panic. He is going to suffer so deeply it is really hard to contemplate. I hope they will sedate him so he doesn’t know what is happening, but I doubt they will be allowed to.
Yes, this is a very tough situation. It weighs heavily on the minds of those who are making decisions. In the end, from what I see, the goal is preservation of life and quality of life is secondary. I feel for you and wish the best for your family. HOpefully this is a short term problem.

I work in a facility in NY and yesterday we implemented no visitation as per DOH. We are offering video chat if the resident/ family wants. We are screening all staff at the door for signs of the virus, every shift.
Depends on the nursing home. Not ours.
If you call the nurses' station, will they send someone to her room to answer the bedside phone and hand it to her, if you callback in 5 minutes? We do that too.

Implemented today at my family member's full-care facility. I totally support it. I feel bad for my family member, but I'd rather she be protected.
I feel much worse for those whose family members are hard of hearing or short of facilities and can't manage a phone much less email. But it's the right call.
