If you suddenly start getting much worse gas mileage it can be an indicator that something is going wrong with your car (in my experience oxygen sensors, which are like $20 to replace but if they don't get replaced can cause your catalytic converter to crap out, which is a much more expensive problem and can send your entire electrical system FUBAR).
It's the vehicle equivalent of getting a $500 water bill - the problem doesn't need to be that you don't have $500, it's figuring out and fixing what's causing your house to suddenly use so much more water.
But also, yes: the environment matters.
