FWIW, DC has been on an extramural (club not NCAA) team, in a community chorus, done writing and editing for a campus publication, worked for Doc Films, gone on amazing trips during break, visited jazz and comedy clubs, plays and concerts, etc. So definitely not all work and no play.


All campuses are seeing a wave of anxiety and depression. Not unique to Chicago unfortunately.

My kid there is very social by any definition and is having a great time. There's no social pressure at UChicago.

NP, but my kid is the same way (didn't get it from me; I had fun drinking in college and love team sports!). Was assuming they'd be best off at a smaller liberal arts school... without a football team.

Meh. My kid is nerdy and doesn’t like to drink, but he was raised to be a much nicer and less judgmental person than to call people “losers” if they make different choices than him. The vast majority of college students drink and or do drugs...if they’re all losers to your (PP’s) kid, then he’s going to have a really hard time in college and professionally.

I went to a different Chicago area school and I heard the weirdest stories from UChi. Like sex parties type of stuff. I went to a school more known for partying but we thought they were odd.

A student who can have fun at tufts can also have fun at U of C. As long as he is reasonably adventurous and friendly, he will have a good time.


It's not about what is done after school... It's the professors and the climate on campus.

Bwahahahahaha!!! The liberal arts schools without football teams (which I’m taking to be code for nerdy, maybe hipsterish?!) are among the most 420 friendly and enthusiastic places in existence.

My student considered it but after touring felt it was the most boring school on his list (and he had a lot of what I would consider to be boring schools), and he chose not to apply. He has a friend that goes there and seems to like it enough, but I wouldn't necessarily define it as a "fun" college experience.

Than again, my idea of fun and someone else's can be vastly different.
