Op here. One of DS’s friends was asking about putting our kids together in camp. A week passed and she already booked the entire summer.

Yeah, they fill up fast. The good ones, anyway. We had our summer planned, camps registered for, flights booked, houses rented, by the end of January.

OP here. I just tried to register for 3 camps and they are all full! I just put my kids on wait lists for 2 camps. I wanted to book travel first but I guess I will book camps first.

Yes it's all planned. But we are also a duel-parent working household so it's essential to have camps booked up. Our rec camps in Arlington filled up within 10 minutes, so there's no hesitating if you want those.

I'd assume you'd want to get the beach house on lock too. Or at least know what week? But we're always coordinating with lots of people (we have 16 people at our annual gathering) so we can't really delay. If we don't block it off early, other things pop up and make it impossible.

Yes. Camps fill up so I booked them wen they opened. Vacation has been planned for months because if I don't carve out the time for a family vacation in an unchangeable way, it gets eaten up by extended family obligations.

Camps yes they are sorted out. BUT our childcare needs are 33-630 2 days a week and I don't have that covered at all yet. The last 3 summers I had a teen babysit but now she is a college freshman and is getting a real job this summer.

I am also a SAHM and didn’t book in advance When they were little. Little kids are usually pretty happy with whatever camp you pick. I liked to have the free time to wing it and wasn’t set on anything.
Now that they are older we plan far in advance. Specific sports camps only offered a time or two, so much stuff to get scheduled in. So enjoy it while you can.

All the camps are selected and booked. The family vacation is planned and booked. We have two working parents and want our son to enjoy his summer camps. So we look for camps that he might like, go through the suggestions with him, and then choose the ones he likes. We also don't want to pay some of the crazy prices for some camps. We know what camps we are comfortable with and look hard at those. And there are some camps that offer a 10-20% discount if you book by a certain date. So a chance to save money and make sure DS is in the camps of his choice drive the desire to be registered as soon as camps open.

Camps fill up fast because working parents want to make sure their kids are at good camps that they are going to enjoy with the type of coverage the family needs.

The only camp we don't have booked is Cub Scout camp and that is because registration has not opened yet.

When our children were little, I too had everything booked in January. Now, 2 teens in HS, 1 plays varsity fall sport (there goes any planning for second half of August). One wants to get a job, one has a camp job - family vacation depends on the job... Scheduling was so much easier when they were little!

She had to. Camps fill up.

Another working mom here with the summer planned. Camp registrations begin opening in January. I start planning in December and touching base with other parents to figure out which camps our kids might want to attend together.

By early February I had all but one week booked. This includes vacation and time with grandparents already scheduled.
Be grateful for the flexibility that you have, OP!

We have a college age summer sitter and she was booked months ago. We travel to a family beach house so that doesn’t need to be booked in advance, which is nice. We also have a Disney trip planned for August which was booked over a year ago. So we are all set for summer. I work FT, if that makes a difference.

FT working mom here - usually have everything booked by now but we’re in an admissions year and the school we end up getting into affects our summer (different schools have summer “prep for next year/get to know the campus” weeks and/or summer programs that I’d like DS to attend at the school we get into). I’ve identified weeks for sleepaway, day camp needs and vacation weeks based on what happens with acceptance.

+1...also, OP is a SAHM, does it even matter if she can't get her snowflakes into camp every week?

Pretty much. Most camps booked, vacation booked. I didn’t do that last summer and it ended up being a bit stressful.
