I could maybe see if he were “renting” an actual room. His utility use will be marginal, since he’s not even living in the house and basically just using the bathroom and window AC unit. The rest of the house would already be generating use anyway from the 3 boys. So, I don’t really see where this makes sense, quite honestly.

Wait, $333 x 3 is $999... Not $1,000
Someone in that family is gonna get an extra $1 and be rich beyond their wildest imagination!

Also calling $333/month for a glorified shed with no running water or kitchen "nominal rent" is hilarious. That's highway robbery.

OP here. The friend would use the kitchen, baths, electricity, water, and gas like all the others and undoubtedly hang out in the house all the time he wasn't sleeping. The other boys are living for free because... their family owns the house.

You're charging him to camp. And no kidding their family owns the house. It doesn't change the fact that your son invited this kid under the implication he would be joining them in their fun "we have somewhere to stay" summer and it would be free and now you're trying to make a buck.

lol at the 'make a buck' comment. People who hold family vacation cottages for three generations on the coast of NC almost universally have generational family wealth. The idea that they saw dollars signs (and 1000 of them!!!!!) is patently laughable.

If they are wealthy, why are they trying to stick it to shed boy?

As others have said, all the boys should share in the labor necessary to keep the place in good shape over the summer. It is beyond bizarre to me that anyone would think of charging the non-family member, and that would be true even if he got an actual room and didn't have to sleep in the shed.

This was my first thought too. What's up with that OP?

I would bet it's a 'gift' to the cousins. I had a friend in undergrad whose family had a place at Dewey and she and her cousins were allowed exclusive use of the cottage during one summer while they worked at Funland. I spent a lot of time there that summer and can promise you the parents would not want to know what went down in that house

We also have 3rd generation cabin and are treading murky waters with our 20 something nieces and nephews (and their SOs or friends) wanting to use it.

I like PPs suggestion of the boys doing some maintenance on exchange for their stay. Our place needs the bathroom painted, gutters cleaned, garage reorganized etc.

In general though, the house is my mom's and she has full veto power which makes things easier because no one second guesses the line "grandma said no"

OP - you are entitled to do anything you want. If the kid's family offended you, do anything you want.

If it was my family the boys would be paying rent as well.

I don't know, the house sounds small (OP said 3 bedrooms 1.5 baths) and overflow is a glorified shed. I'm not so sure there is generations of wealth here. OP, is your husband an executive and your kids attending a Big 3. That could truly make this thread epic.

I would not charge money but I would absolutely want a release since he is not living in a habitable unit. Whether it would be enforceable or not is an open issue, but I would at least want it.

I don't think it's right to charge this friend rent. I just wouldn't do it myself, personally. It's a risk that he would damage the property in some way, but you either take that risk, or don't invite the kid.

You are charging the kid who is living in the shed? Yes, you are amazingly cheap and stingy. If you were considering charging one kid, then you let him live in the house. The fact you thought the parents would not react their kid subsidizing your kids stay says a lot about you. You cannot rent out the house to others because the house is being used by the family kids. One kid living in a shed does not add $333 in extra utilities.

There is no justification for your fee Unless you are providing food. How would you feel if these friends invited your kid over for a sleepover and then charged you for him to sleep in the yard? I mean, they let him use the bathroom to pee, so he was using the water. So why would they not charge you?

Eye roll? I imagine that other lady is giving you and eye roll and much more!

Do you really think the marginal cost of that boy staying in the bunk shed is $1000 for the summer? Is this your son's good friend? And why do your charge him unless DH's family is that hard up for $$??
What does DS think?

I would have been mortified if my parents did this to a friend of mine.

Exactly... If the family is that hard up to make $1,000 they sound freakin cheap!
