Subject: Crib to bed transition but steep staircase?
My kid isn't old enough to wander around at night, but there are stairs between her room and the bathroom that cannot accommodate a baby gate. We'll have to dream up some new product before then, I guess.

This was us years ago, an yup hard mounted baby gate at the top of the stairs.

We have a 3 and 6 year old and still keep a baby gate up after they go to bed for this reason. The stairs are right outside my 3 year old's bedroom and I'm worried she'll stumble and fall when going to the bathroom half asleep in the middle of the night.

I don't think that is retractable. I think it is adjustable in width which is not the same thing. That page you linked to and the gate on that page are not retractable.

Wouldn't do it for babies, but okay for dogs and cats.
Cant a baby just climb under this gate?
Answer:Our 1 yr old grandson did after he saw our dogs (small breed) do it. This was when set in a 52" wide passage. It would be very hard to do on a 36" doorway. It wasn't an easy crawl for him but he made it. I immediately returned it ( wish they would have repaired the holes it created ) and no questions asked refunded me.… see more

Can anyone recommend a handyman who knows how to install baby gates in tricky stair situations? Also, any brand recommendations for hardware mounted gates.

After I almost fell down our stairs at night when pregnant, we kept the gate up for a long time.
+1 to mounted gate. It was painful screwing that thing in to the brand new Newell post after paying a fortune to replace all the metal railings in our home with wood, but having just taken the hardware off for the first time a couple weeks ago (after 6 years) the damage to the wood was less than I had expected. I think the pressure mounted gate at the bottom of the stairs has actually done more damage by messing up the paint in a way that we cannot seem to repair with simple touch ups.
