I would do Carmel Valley personally. Both CbtS and PG are cold and foggy much more often than I would like. (And, yes, I know what I am talking about - I grew up there and now spend summer vacations visiting family shivering under layers of fleece).

Carmel if you're over 50, or like being the youngest people in a room full of wealthy octegenarians.

Carmel is safer but PG is more active. If you prefer quiet/safe/beach, pick Carmel. If you prefer active/involved/tide pools, pick PG.
