What fields are more promising? DD is in 10th grade and loves math, and we are trying to decide what field to choose.

It's too bad that his advisor is checked out (or perhaps just doesn't align...advisors don't always) but your kid needs to reach out to other professors. Perhaps he already is. That is what we are there for. Just make sure he understands the difference between full time/tenure track or tenured professors and adjuncts -- not a great idea to reach out to adjuncts, because they are not there often and are not paid to advise students.
