Why is it so scary to name actual body parts that everyone in your family has and describe their function? This is not explicit, this is actual human biology that has been essential for the existence of humanity. Birds and bees do it, too.

My kid’s are all donor egg IVF babies. It was actually pretty easy to explain in our scenario because I could fall back on science and emphasize that there are lots of different ways that a sperm meets and egg. My 5 year-old got it and, since a few of his friends have same-sex parents, it was helpful in explaining that each family is built in its own unique way.

Give me a break, he's 3. He understood the seed idea because he had planted his own plant seed at school and watched it grow. He really didn't need to know explicit details about exactly how the seed got there via sperm, eggs and sexual intercourse at that age.

Honestly, for a little kid it’s a lot scarier to take this approach about this topic. The kids going to walk away thinking they could just end up with a baby in their tummy for no reason! Don’t be stupid. Or at least buy a book if you’re so uncomfortable talking about the facts of life.

Immaculate conception is nbd for preschoolers. Mommy and daddy made the baby would be way too out there.

OP I was so glad dd asked young. It was easier than ds who wasn't naturally wondering. I said tiny part until she was 5ish than I said sperm and egg. It wasn't until last that she asked how the part from the daddy gets in the mommy. We had a book too, it helped with order of explaining and I had told dd that it was up to other moms and dads when they told their own kids.

The book was on a top shelf but of course diligent little dd was certain to tell her friend she could read any book on these shelves except for that book : )

This! I use the right words (no "seed" or anything like that). And then brace for follow up questions. I haven't had to get into the mechanics of EXACTLY how this all happens yet. My daughter is starting to ask more questions about how the baby gets out because my "the doctor helps you" is apparently not cutting it.

My 2.75 year old was the same and asked if it comes out my belly button. I explained very simply either through my vagina or through a cut a doctor makes in my tummy. He was born via c-section and was way more interested in the cutting part and never questioned the vagina part. I showed him my scar from when he was born.

This "daddy planted a seed" language is ridiculous. Little kids don't understand metaphors and would have a totally wrong idea about what goes on.

Not only did DD ask me how baby got in there -- she asked how it gets out! LOL Explaining the "getting out" part was easier.
