Omg these are horrific! Hilariously so and happy that some of you can look back with a good attitude but these stories are nuts!

The flush on the toilet in my son’s bedroom failed the morning after we moved in and (clean?
ish) refill toilet water overflowed allll over his bathroom and dripped down to my husband’s closet. Luckily I was up and heard the water continuously running through the pipes and ran up there before it got out of hand, but I remember trying to find a reputable plumber the morning after our move (right before 4th of July) was not great. I thought that was bad since the toilet was fine at inspection, but it’s pretty much nothing compared to some of these doozies!

We moved in the morning after the 2012 derecho. When the power finally came back on, it fried some appliances.

The dishwasher leaked all over the kitchen floor the first time I used it after moving in. Definitely missed by the home inspector! We bought a new dishwasher.

The day we bought it! Someone fell and landed on a toolbar, cutting themselves on a saw.

But as for the house? Leaking toilet about six months later.

The bottom rusted out of the hot water heater and flooded the basement about a year in.

First month or two... Heavy rains led to water in our garage storage room.

First month. The basement flooded with about 3-4 inches of water. The developer was over in 1/2 an hour flat to pump out the water and snake the drain. This ended up being a recurring problem with no known cause. At least the city installed a clean out in the front yard and DC water came over the last time this happened. We haven't had a flood since last fall, but then again, it hasn't really poured since then. Fingers crossed.

Furnace gave out on the coldest day of winter. It was 15 years old at that point. DH was out of town, I came home in the evening to a freezing house and I called several HVAC companies who said they wouldn’t come out for emergency service unless we already had a service contract with them. I finally reached Davis and Davis who immediately sent someone out. Thankfully it was a cheap fix. That furnace chugged on for another 13 years before we finally replaced it for an efficient one.

Basement flooded the day we moved in due to historic rain.

Day 2. We were catching rain water with a bucket in our master bedroom. 14k to replace the roof.

Fridge and oven both stopped working in the same week a couple of weeks after we moved in. At least we were able to take care of both with the same service call.....

We moved in on the day of closing. That night the water heater failed. We woke to 2-3 inches of continually running water on the first floor of our new townhouse. Fortunately my husband had paid attention during the home inspection and was able to turn off the water to the house. Also, VERY fortunately, the sump pump in the basement worked and was pumping out the water that was cascading down from the 1st floor. Unfortunately it was the day of New Year's Eve so it was the dickens getting someone to come out and replace the dang thing. It was not an auspicious beginning for our new house and new year. Oh well, that's life!
