I tip everyone who comes in the door unless it’s a licensed pro like a plumber or an electrician.

I tip for assembly even if I paid for it ($300 paid to Macy's for an entire bedroom set), and also offer them water.
I don't tip for carting a box into a room. If multiple flights of stairs were involved, I might.

The guy Handy sent me was very good and we started chatting. I found out how little of the assembly fee went to him when I tipped him. He gave me his card and I’m going to have him do some work for me. That opportunity to hand out his card is why he takes these low paying assembly jobs.

Please tip us! We don’t get much. Some assemblies are more tedious than others and have many more pieces and hardware. Not difficult but very tedious.

I’m an assembly technician with Wayfare we barely get anything with the install or assembly and we would appreciate a tip from the customer because for most of the time we have to drive a long way to do the job for 30 or $40.

I was going to, but the complaints about how small my living room is pretty much killed that. He didn't use all the assembly parts so I had to figure out where they were supposed to go. Unhooked all my cable/ phone stuff so he could put it all through the holes in the back of the unit but then just left it and I had no cable or internet.

As someone who assembles furniture for Wayfair, it's not expected, but very much appreciated. Those doing the assembly do not work for Wayfair. I personally work for a company contracted with Wayfair, among several others, to do assemblies. I don't take on many from Wayfair, because they are by far one of the lowest paying. Not sure how the assembly fee is divided up, but the person actually doing it gets very little of it. Getting 40% of it would be the highest I'd receive. On average I'd say it's more like 20-25%.

It’s insane how this works. Just to give everyone a bit of perspective from handyman’s side, Wayfair gets their furniture assembly from company called HANDY for pros. The assembler is getting paid $24 for 2-3 hours of work and guess what you pay Wayfair? like 4 times what the assembler actually gets paid. Literally like $12/h and that’s not even including drive time so actually less. No handyman wants to do it it’s crazy. Go somewhere else like TaskRabbit where the worker actually gets properly compensated.

As an assembler myself, I get less than half what the customer pays for me to come and do it. For instance, I just assembled a dresser for $45 and the lady told me she paid a little over $100 to get it assembled. Of course this came up in small talk as indo not outright talk to the customers about what they pay for the furniture or the assembly. But it was kind of a bummer hearing that wayfair charges such a rate and the guy/gal doing the work gets less than half of it. It's not like they have any sort of overhead on their assemblers. I'm the one using my gas, my vehicle, and my tools. So I NEVER mention a tip, but I do greatly appreciate them. Only if i deserve one. If I'm late, messy, leave them the boxes to discard without asking, etc. I don't deserve one. But if I'm prompt, efficient, well mannered, and leave the home clean, only then will I feel good to receive a tip. Believe me, it's not a get rich quick scheme on our end. I have to get lucky and fill an entire day to make it worth what I'd make elsewhere working another full time job. Which is luck of the draw as far as how many people In my area need my service and how quickly I can book it before another Pro Service Member does it first.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion some may have about whether we deserve tips or not. Some may have been under the impression we get a healthy chunk of the Assembly fee. Gosh I wish! Haha
