DH is 6'3
Other DS is on track to be 6'2
Mom's Brother 1 6', Brother 2 6', Grandmother 5'4 Grandfather was 5'8
Dad's brother is 6'2, Grandmother was 5'10, Grandfather was 5'10
I'm just curious if anyone has a story like this where DS was on track to be a solid 5" under the shortest person in the family, and a good foot under most of the male relatives. Do we need to look into further testing?

5’4 is the average height for women. 5’8.5 is the average height of man, even if my son did trend towards me. 5’4 is well below that for a male. It would be very unusual for a son to be as small/smaller than his mom who is of average height with so many relatives above 6’
Is this true? No wonder everyone seems so short. Sometimes I just blame the DC area, which is definitely filled with short guys. But I suppose it's just filled with average guys.

DS "big" at birth- almost 9 pounds and 22 inches
"small" from age 1-10 - 60th-70th percentile in height- but always on the "shorter side" when compared to local peers - shortest in class at K-1, one of the shortest in grades 2-4
Now DS is in 6th grade and in the 90th percentile for height and is on the tall side of the middle in his class... and is growing like a weed! Guessing he will end up near the middle...
If your DS is healthy growing and staying on the curve I wouldn't worry about it, all kids grow at different rates. You have many years ahead of you, I would try not to stress about his adult height before he's even 2 years old.
My ped said growth under 2 is actually a pretty reliable predictor of adult height.
Mine said the opposite. It is NOT genetic at birth/before 2. Genetics come into play after 2. Many things influence a tiny or very big baby---nutrition, prematurity, etc. But, past 2 the advantages or disadvantages disappear and it's mostly genetics. My oldest was a huge infant/toddler---like 100% height and 90% weight. By 3, he leveled out and is more like what I would expect given family height---75% height, 50% weight. My youngest was teeny tiny and didn't eat as a toddler. It was like OP's child. He went from 75% at birth to 16% at 2. But now at 11 years old he's 50% height, still pretty damn skinny. He's the tiniest of everyone--but my husband is 5'10" so he tracks with that.

DS 1= Tracking to be 6'2
DS 2= Tracking to be 5'3 adult height, 20months
Mom= 5'4
Mom's Brother 1 & Brother 2= Both over 6'
Mom's Mom= 5'4
Mom's Dad= 5'8
Dad= 6'3
Dad's Brother= 6'2
Dad's Mom= 5'10
Dad's Dad= 5'11
I find it odd he is smaller than the shortest female?
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:You've got me confused here. 10th percentile should be tracking to be 5'6", shouldn't it? The reason I know that is that it's my percentile and height. When I was your son's age I was 5th percentile height. I'm not sure that's what you want to hear, but I guess doubling percentile is good news?
My kids' mother was from a tall family like your husband. My younger son was 40th percentile at his 4 year old check up and was 66th percentile at his 6 year old check up. So, these things can change over time.
He is 20m and 31 inches. The calculator I used put him at 5'4.
I'm wondering if he may already have Constitutional growth delay which my siblings had and what age that would be tested? (it's usually a bone scan)
The reason his short height has become an issue is because he had another odd health concern with his teeth development and is getting tested for celiac soon, not sure if it is related. Trying to figure out if this is a medical reason or it's possible that is his natural curve.
