Subject: No parties at preschool. Would you throw the first one?
Sounds like a good way to meet the parents, IF that's what you want. I definitely wouldn't expect all 12 to show up, for what it's worth.
But totally not necessary to do a class party for 2/3 year olds. We only got invited to 3 out of 20 of DD's friends third birthday parties last year (and she had one where she invited the whole class, but it was at a playground). This year, there are 15 kids in her class, and we've been to one 4th b-day party.

my daughter has been invited to a whole bunch of whole class birthday parties and we are only reciprocating w/a whole class for her 5th birthday since it will be her last year in preschool.
We generally prefer smaller birthday parties with just inviting a few friends.

For a child's birthday? Forget it.
When our kids were that age though, we were trying to build some community and meet some new people, so we threw a cocktail party for the class parents, mostly strangers at the time. It was a blast - we're still friends with some of those people 20 years later.

All the kids in her class are 2-3. Our friends all have kids ages 0-10. The past two years, we had house parties and invited our friends and their kids. DH wants to do the same but I’m torn about the class. DH thinks we don’t know them and they didn’t invite us so why invite them when we have actual friends to invite.
Not all families have parties. So, it’s not that you are not always not invited but there is no party to invite you to. We did not do them at that age.
