I worked in auto manufacturing at a plant that Toyota and GM shared. Both cars came off the same line. The Toyota's went out the door to be sold - the GMs went to the side to fix assembly issues.

There were a lot of similarities - as well as differences.

Kia and Hyundai are both car makers that originated in South Korea, and as a result of Kia’s bankruptcy in 2007 Hyundai now owns a part of their company. Many of the comparable models of each car maker share the exact same body structure as a result. However, Kia does still operate independently and has a separate design workshop, marketing, and branding.

When it comes to practical differences, here are the main distinctions:

Design. Hyundai uses a curvy, flowing body structure and luxury interior while Kia aims for a sportier look to appeal to a younger generation.
Demographics. The design and luxury interior of Hyundai cars are aimed at an older age group who want great value and quality at affordable prices, while the sporty design and lower-priced cars are targeted to a much younger crowd.
Console system. Hyundai’s Blue Link interior console system is designed for the convenience of the driver and how they can operate the vehicle, while Kia’s UVO system appeals to sporty-minded drivers by focusing on the vehicle and its performance or maintenance.
Outlook. Hyundai has been established in Canada and North America for much longer than Kia, and as a result is a higher end brand. Kia, however, is one of the fastest growing car brands as it gains a foothold in Canada by appealing to younger drivers.
So when it comes down to it, the differences in style and functionality between Kia and Hyundai vehicles comes down to the group each car maker targets: Hyundai are slightly more expensive but offers more luxury and quality for older drivers, while Kia are priced more affordable and designed for younger car owners.

I thought Hyundai + Kia were under the same automaker@??

They are. Which is why I at the post.

My old man used to say the same thing. He was a Lincoln-Mercury guy. Swore up and down they were better than a Ford. Said a Grand Marquis was a better car than a Crown Victoria. I finally showed him an article about the assembly line where they built them. Same line. Same car. One gets Ford trim, the next one gets Mercury trim. Reality was they were both horrible cars.

Those were GREAT automobiles. That aside though, no, the Hyundai/Kia affiliation is NOTHING like the Ford/Lincoln-Mercury affiliation. Also, the differences between Ford and Lincoln-Mercury vehicles was more than just trim. Would you say the same about a Toyota and a Lexus - they're the same except for the trim?

+1. Not the same car. Someone explained the realtionship above. They're like cousins, not even siblings and surely not twins.

Got a Palisade and love it! The third row is roomy, the features in the top trim is great, especially the leather seats and rear seat warmers. Trunk space could be a little better; however, that's my only complaint.

I'll just get a Telluride then.

Apparently it’s even worse with Telluride. Most selling over MSRP. We have USAA and couldn’t get a price under their buying program for much less than MSRP.

We were offered MSRP. If you go to the Hyundai website they have all the local dealers with in stock. We asked to special order one and they said no. (one reason we didn't buy one). There is some negotiation but you may need to dealer shop and be prepared to travel. USAA and Costco buyers programs are not helpful. I just bought a car (seriously considered this one) and went only to figure out my target price and emailed many dealers in MD/VA/PA/WV/NJ and started to negotiate. 6 came back close and I choose the best offer out of that. USAA and Costco price could not touch what I negotiated.

I am not surprised - I had a difficult time finding any to test drive - and there was not a lot of negotiating with the dealer over price.

Just to clarify, there is no "Hyundai Genesis" now that Hyundai has spun off its luxury brand. That would be like saying you were going to buy a Toyota Lexus.

The Genesis GV80 is scheduled to be revealed on January 16.
