Also- make sure that before and aftercare is not SOLD OUT. [Over the years I have run into the problem at: Sidwell, FONZ and Smithsonian camps]
How was the smithsonian camp? Was looking for some feedback but the comments were a little dated!

NP. Frustrated as well that I just looked at Montgomery County camp guide and Rockville City camp guide (camps through the government rec dept, not privately run camps) and almost none of them start before 9 am and almost none of them offer before care. I just don’t know how working parents can plan to get to work at 10ish (after commute) on a regular basis, at least I certainly cannot. So that leaves the more expensive privately-run camps.

I think that $5-$600 is pretty average for a week of camp that’s 8-6. If you had a sitter for 10 hours a day, it would be at least $750/week at $15/hour.

Agree OP. It is really aggravating the short hours.
Our solutions:
1) college girl to handle pre and after care.
Or
2) these were ok priced and had before/after - Silver stars, county camp at one of their parks (the other county-run camps with before/after care that we tried were mostly awful), Camp Sonshine, KAH camp, Club SciKidz camp.

Yep... with transportation we'll be paying about $6,000 for camp this summer. This is why they say you don't save much after kids get out of daycare...

Montgomery County Rec Dept will be your least expensive camps (and will have after care)
Then YMCA (will have aftercare)
Then private camps (some have aftercare some don't)
Wait until you see the cost of sleep away camp (cheapest - scouts, then YMCA, then privates)!
Keep in mind that the Aftercare is usually after six hours of non-stop action. The kids need some down time, if it's just hanging around, Let It Be, because they need it!

Almost every camp affiliated with a school will have before and aftercare. Big camps, like Levine, also have before and aftercare. $400-500 without before/aftercare, plus an additional before/aftercare fee, is reasonable.
It's only the small specialty places that don't have extended hours.

+1 and there's an early bird discount. They have a summer fun center program at different locations around the county for $395 for the whole summer. Must have completed K.

ESF in Moco has extended day, and if you sign up for at least six weeks it is included for free. Camp runs between $475- $525 per week inclusive of before/after.

We’re in Fairfax county and there are options with aftercare in VA and nearby in DC. It adds up but when I calculated, it was cheaper than sitter.
Headfirst -it’s kind of “babysitting” but ok, Sidwell-very similar and they have early drop off too, Kids Language Arts-same language teachers until close and you can pick/pay per day.

Another vote for Y camps. My kids are now grown, but they were great for the price point. Definitely geared for working parents.
And yes, OP, those 9-3 camps were always such a challenge. So many cool camps that my kids just couldn’t attend without before/aftercare.
