OP here, this thread is giving me all sorts of great books. I just looked up the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and it's narrated in part by Bahni Turpin, who was one of the great narrators in The Help. And it turns out Turpin has narrated a bunch of great books, so just going off her books alone will give me some good candidates.
