Oh PP again, I did NOT get into UNC. That was well known to be a stretch school for me so I highly doubt your son would get in either with slightly lower stats

I had a 3.2 GPA from a very average high school in a different state, SAT lower 1400s, ACT 32. I got into Tulane, GWU, Wisconsin, Maryland, and some others. Later on I got my act together and got a PhD at an ivy league university. There's really no reason to be getting Bs if you are above 95th percentile on a standardized test, other than laziness (which I was, and it sounds like you son is)

Where do these kind of kids end up? We don't have super high goals - just want to make sure he ends up somewhere he is happy. He wants somewhere will school spirit and a fun campus life. Counselor says Wisconsin, Vermont, UNC but those seem like reaches based on this board. HELP!

The kid should continue to discuss target schools with the counselor and applying to 6-7, not 3.

Many of these kids would be A students in public. The top DC private schools are very demanding.

My ds had a b average from a mom big 3 private and a 30. Got into both unass and Skidmore among many others. B students from big 3 with 31 ish scores will get into many of the schools mentioned. Ignore all stats on gpa or class rank other than your school’s Naviance and talk to your counselor.

DD was a B+ student (unweighted) at an elite private last year and is at Wisconsin as recruited athlete; she loves it. Two other kids with similar academic profile also went and I agree with counselor that its a target but not safety. Other kids went to UC Boulder, Lehigh, Alabama, University of Miami. These are all kids in a mix of honors/grade level classes, Bs but not perfect GPAs.

Did the counselor mean UNC Chapel Hill or one of the other locations? There is no way Chapel Hill will happen with those stats.

Check out skidmore, vassar, bates, university of Rochester, Miami university of Ohio, northeastern, Lehigh, Lafayette. Wisconsin will probably work out. UVM will work out. UNC is a reach. I’d also look at UMass Amherst and Delaware.

There are literally thousands of colleges/universities and your kid's counselor came up with THREE?

Have you visited any schools yet? Is your DS more specific besides fun and school spirit? How close/far from home? Urban vs. suburban vs. rural? Big, small, medium? We meet with my DS's (small private) counselor in February and we already have a list, although open to any other schools she has to recommend. We've done a lot of visits, admittedly on the early side since DS is a travel team player too and his schedule is tight.

I think I'd be less concerned with "where do students from big 3 schools go" and more focused on where your kid will flourish.
