I was 37 with my first and it took only two months to conceive. With my second, we waited until DD was 12 mos to start trying. It took us six months and some help from Clomid that time. I was 38, about to turn 39 when we conceived DS

It's easy to parent at 40.

Harder to parent a teenager in your late fifties.....

The OP did not ask for your opinion.

WTF? Of course OP did. Why do you think she posted?!?! What a dimwit.

You seem to lack basic comprehension skills. Let me explain: OP wants to know how long she should wait before trying to conceive again. Clear enough for you?

She asked how long you waited to conceive, not your opinion on how difficult it will be to parent. Try to keep up... ?

I conceived my first easily at 35 (she was born just before I turned 36) and could not imagine trying again before she was 2. So that’s when we started... and it took us 4 years to get pregnant again, even though I was told it would never happen (which is a whole separate story).

My best advice is first to have some basic testing done by your doctor to see if there are any issues. Once I did that after we had been trying for 6 months we quickly realized I was pre-menopausal and would need major intervention. Assuming all your stats come back ok you may have a little more time to decide.

OP, you'll obviously need to do what works best for your family. My situation was a little different as IVF was involved, and I had my dd at age 38 thanks to a successful second round.

My OB told me at my 6 week checkup to start trying again immediately (as in start IVF all over again as there were no spare embryos). It was so nerve wracking to go through it without having a baby yet that I couldn't imagine doing that to myself again during my baby's infancy - I finally had what I had been longing for and it felt foolish to compromise that opportunity by not being able to really savor time with her. I decided to wait.

My IVF was due to H's infertility issues and my pregnancy and delivery were easy, so I figured that if another child was in the cards for us I would do it when it was right for us, rather than when it was right for the doctors.

I think your instincts are right in this situation. I would not risk waiting a year.

To answer your question, I was 38 when DC1 was born and 39 with DC2. They are 17 months apart. It was a long time ago but I don’t think I used birth control after DC1 was 3-4 months.

OP start as soon as possible. I would say don’t do it at all but the sooner the better at your age.

Had first at 36 and could not imagine taking care of 2 until DS turned 2. Took us 8 months to conceive #2, so was nearly 40 by the time I delivered. Worked out well for us but I realize we got lucky.
