OP my brother only had one kidney (due to repeated UTI’s that basically killed one kidney). He had surgery at age 6 to take the ureter from the diseased non-functional kidney and attach it to the kidney that worked (although that kidney didn’t work 100%). He is in his 40’s and it’s never been an issue for him.

OP here. Thank you, so much, to everyone who shared your stories. By last night, I had calmed down thanks to all of you. When DH came home from work, I shared this thread with him too.

Our appointment this morning with the pediatric urologist was beyond amazing. I have never felt so reassured leaving a doctor's office. The doctor let us know that he'd seen this kidney combo many times, that the multicystic kidney would not cause harm, and that anything that goes wrong with the duplicated system kidney is fixable with a simple surgery.

We left the appointment feeling over the moon and went out for lunch. What a turnaround. Thanks so much everyone.

Just chiming in to say that if neither outlet is blocked, you might never know if quit for the u/s. My friend just found out because of an unrelated hernia at age 38!

Duplicating collecting systems can be a normal variant! I have one and it wasn’t ever noticed until I had a kidney stone- on the opposite side- and they were like “oh by the way you have 2 renal pelvises and 2 ureters on your other kidney”. Prayers for your sweet baby!

The double ureter thing is actually quite common. My daughter has it on both kidneys and we were told about 10% of the population has it and just doesn’t know as we don’t all get kidney scans. It can cause problems but it can also just be an anatomical anomaly. In our case we had to get tearing done when our daughter was one month old, and then follow ups every 6 months until she was about 2.5 and the doctor said if anything was going to come up, it would have by now.

TLDR : it’s very likely the double ureter kidney will be totally fine, try not to fret!
