That's if the child is actually a gamer, or if the parent plans to sell it soon after it is opened. The best handheld game for the child will be one without much resale or pawn value, so the child gets to play with it and the parents don't take it away.

I agree with this. I think this kid asked for a handheld game (so a DS is fine, or something else, doesn't have to be a switch) and did not ask for a tablet. A kindle is a tablet.

I would get a DS or a bike (but do you even know the size of bike?)

Get a gift card to game stop. Hide it in one of those purses from justice (if a girl) or a pair wallet or pair of jeans if a boy. I like angel trees because they are for kids in very specific curcumstances but the person who recorded that kids gift should have encouraged the kid to mention some more reasonable options.

+1. Lots of value there. Set up a CamelCamelCamel.com alert because they go on deep discount this time of year.

Yes, I think this is a good idea too. There were some that were on sale for less than $40 that I saw today. That way he can download free games and apps and not need to worry about purchasing games.

You could also do a $15-25 gift card to buy books/apps. That would be more practical than a handheld.

I'd do a bike over DS.

The switch will likely get pawned, I would do a bike.

I thought angel tree requests were usually little kids who believed in Santa?

He’s 12 so prob on the upper end of things? Thanks all for the clothing ideas.. I’m leaning towards getting a bike — I’m assuming a 12 year old would get an adult bike or near to that? My kids are younger. And then I was thinking I could get one or two cheaper “gift-y” things in addition to some clothes, but what would they be? I just feel like I can’t justify a Nintendo switch in addition to the bike and at least the bike is good for exercise, transportation, etc. the other reason I don’t want to get the switch is bc you need money to buy games and the “good” one are around $50 so it doesn’t seem like it would be useful to the kid?

I also dont want to give it back bc, since I signed up last minute close to the cut off date, it seems unlikely someone would take the kid if I do.

No need to get a switch. Get the handheld posted above via amazon. They are fun. Get a hoodie sweatshirt - men's small (or even medium) or kids 18/20 if you don't have sizes. Or, a jacket and gloves.

Get a small men's bike - 24 inch. The kid is probably close to 5 feet.

You could also get a helmet and decent lock to go with it. Maybe a bell or lights for the back or fun lights for the tires.

Also thank you all for recommendations on non-switch handheld games. I honestly didn’t really know there were others so that’s straight where my mind went, but you’re right there are options there.
