We have an alcove/nook in our guest room and we have two tension shower curtain rods that we put up for guest coats.

If they’re in the house, they’re in the house.

If they’re on the coats, there on the coats, whether they’re in the closet or on the bed. “Bed” bugs can find a host on any fabric.

We host a fairly large (well, for our home) holiday gathering every year, with about 70-100 guests. I spread out a sheet over the beds in two of our rooms, and guests' coats on top. Keeps any outside dirt from getting on our bedspreads.

If it’s a party with dozens of guests, spare bed or spare chair is fine. If it’s just for dinner they need to clear out their coat closet. Insane that they hoard so many coats that guests coats don’t fit

Always on a bed, especially when there is a big party and there isn't enough room on the rack. I grew up in New England and everyone did this.

Actually there is a scene in the movie Ghost Busters, where Lewis the accountant is hosting a party. As his guests come in, he takes their coat and puts them on his bed.

I think they meant the coats are dirty from being outside and would foul up the bed.

When we expectEd more than 2 people over we would move all of our family coats into a room (on a chair not bed) and leave the coat closet and extra hangers for the guests. I do this in my own house now. Before any large party the coat rack is empty.
