I know a guy who tried to take ownership of a woman's house after he moved in with her and then they broke up. He claimed he deserved an ownership stake because he'd helped with the mortgage and put in sweat equity.

He didn't succeed but it cost her a lot in legal fees and was so stressful for her. I still kind of hate the guy for pulling that sh*t. So if you do this, consult a lawyer. (and yes, consider renting out your own place and renting a neutral place for a year.)

IMO, rent your house out for a year, then jointly rent an apartment together to play house in for a year. At the end of the year, move back to your own home and re-evaluate the relationship.
