OP here. I'm LOLing at the suggestion to buy a new house. That seems a bit extreme and expensive, no? The realtor commission and other closing costs would be more than a new car.

To the pp's asking about the garage - it is a two car garage, that is actually plenty spacious inside, with two single garage doors. We currently park my van along with my husband's mid size sedan as well as bikes, scooters, lawn mower, etc. along the side and back walls.

My neighbors with identical house models to me have Highlanders and MDX's so I know those will fit.

We'll see. But thanks all for the suggestions!

Your house is garbage i would sell it, the garage door should be 9 feet wide.

Sorry if you answered this and I missed it, but is it a house with one garage for one car? Or a garage that fits two cars?

If it's one that fits two cars, you can have a contractor replace the two separate garage doors with one massive door instead.

My neighbors did this because their van didn't fit. I bet they had the same model you did and they bought a 2018 in late 2018 without realizing it was bigger.

Not sure how much it cost, though.

Time to buy a new house with a single door garage door.

If you have a 2010 Odyssey, that is a third generation. The years for the Honda Odyssey third generation were 2005 - 2010. So you are currently driving the most recent year that generation came out.

I was going to suggest you look for a used Odyssey in a more recent year of whatever generation you currently have, but now that I have looked that up, I see that option is not viable.

OP. Google says your 2010 Odyssey is 77" wide. The 2019 is 79" side.

None of the USNWR top 5 are less than 78" wide.

From the Car & Driver top 10, the following two are narrower:
Mercedes Benz Metris (76" wide)
Ford Transit Connect (72" wide)

For what it's worth, I recently replaced my car with a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I love it (but I hate minivans and prefer SUVs). Both the non-hybrid and hybrid are 76" wide and it just barely fits into our 2 car garage sharing space with our Prius. You aren't going to get this plus a car bigger than about a mid-size in a 2 car garage. That said, it is an inch narrower than you currently have, to you're probably good.

OP here. I’ve found many of the online measurements do not include the mirrors, or don’t say if they do or not. It’s not standardized.

As for backing out with no mirrors, we tried that on the test drive and it was not for us. With my current car, I use the mirror to determine how close to the door I need to be. If my driver side mirror is too far from the garage door, I know the passenger mirror will likely hit and I need to realign.

I have a very old single car garage and this is exactly what I did when I was shopping for an SUV. I did not want to fold in my mirrors because I use them to back out. I'm sure I avoided a big headache.

Yes, you need to do your homework, OP.

My neighbors bought the new version of their van and realized after the fact that it would not fit through their garage door!
You can perhaps look at widening your garage opening, or accept that you'll need a narrower car. Or just learn to back up without the mirrors - it's perfectly possible.

If it’s any comfort, OP, I have a 2018 top of the line Odyssey and don’t like it nearly as much as I liked our 2006 version. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t buy the 2018. I don’t think they’ve changed it much since we bought it so for you maybe the door problem is a gift. Compared to the 2006, the 2018 is much more annoying to drive — the seats aren’t as high or as comfortable, it’s harder to see, its bigger/wider so it feels like your driving a big boat, not a nimble car. I LOVED our 2006 and would buy it again right now. The 2018–nope.

Only the top package has this option. We didn’t think to get that package because we didn’t want the DVD player. We all use iPads and my toddlers rear face

OP here. The above person is not me. The issue is that with the mirrors folded it’s incredibly difficult to back out of the garage. My husband manually folded the ones on the van we test drove. The trim package that includes power folding mirrors is $46k including taxes, and like I said it’s nearly impossible to back out without the benefit of mirrors - I don’t want to do that 2-3x a day.

Yes there are other vans, but the Odyssey is our favorite by far. Maybe the new Sienna will wow us, but I don’t expect it to be narrower.

Op I have a 2015 Odyssey that barely makes it through the garage- does your van have a rear camera? For backing up out of the garage in particular I only use the camera at this point and I only check the mirrors out as I approach the door frame with them. Something to consider?

OP here. I don’t get this either. I bought a 2-car garage home for a reason, and I’m not giving up my parking spot no matter how much I like a car. I was a loyal Honda customer.

NP. One of the reasons we were attracted to minivans in the first place was exactly that they fit into narrower spaces than things like SUVs. Side opening doors, a thinner profile, etc.

They're absolutely insane to mess with something as fundamentally important as the width of a cash cow like the Odyssey.
