We did see some police presence in the park but that didn't seem to deter them much.

I think if this keeps happening, these types of events will go to donation requested to enter except for certain days, which will be the freebie days.

I'm glad my out of town family members flew home this afternoon because a good portion of Friday morning was spent telling them how DC was NOT bad. To them, DC = Chicago in terms of violence. Kind of hard to argue when a shooting happened where they were the night before, you know? Not a great look.

This is how DC is now. Fare jumping and eating are legal. If police intervene with poor teen behavior they are filmed and yelled at. If you dont have the will to police bad behavior, you get bad behavior. Glad I have options besides metro. That's how these teens get around, and the lawlessness down their no doubt feeds their overall sense of impunity.

Memo to wilding “teenagers”: pull your pants up, buckle down in school or get a job, be civil and courteous and follow the law. Oh, and don’t shoot a gun in a crowd of families. It’s not that complicated.

But some of our finest Council members just held a hearing where they told Metro police to stop “harassing” young groups of color on the Metro.

Crazy. And aggravating. The zoo has been trying to increase security and close itself off from the neighborhood, and wants increased fencing. So aggravating that people likely not from the neighborhood are creating the ammunition for those m measures to go through.

Yes, it's crazy that People Not From the Neighborhood came to the National Zoo. It's crazy and aggravating that UMC white people can't have a sealed off bubble in NWDC where no urban issues, like crime or guns, intrude. How dare they do this to you!

If people act like this, then no, they are not welcome in the neighborhood or west of the Park. Who wants wilding, mayhem and violence in their community?

Maybe keep it free but ugh I guess they may need to add a security check.

Thanks Bowser and Council,

You’ve passed laws that decriminalize everything from fate evasion to smoking marijuana is public, and emasculated the police. No wonder that the thugs feel emboldened, that this is their town. Once persistent and yes, aggressive policing is going to put this evil genie back in the bottle. Stepped up enforcement of both major and quality of like crimes is needed also.

We have never paid, this was the 4th year we have gone. They do charge for parking even for members.

DC has turned into a hell hole

https://twitter.com/imoscarsanchez/status/1201003381483016192?s=21

This after many instances of attacks by teens in the metro, the guy beaten by teens outside of the hotel, and now this. Have fun paying a million dollars+ for a home in a terrible city.

Hey all you UNC NW DC dwellers--this is a big city, historically black, that you have aggressively gentrified. This thread is full of microaggressions and I'm sorry if it hurts your liberal heart to hear this but you're actually racist. Crime in DC is not nearly what it was years ago. No big city will be crime free.

And, our city has all these great Smithsonian museums (including zoo) which make great art and experiences available to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic class or ability to pay. I'm proud of that.

Another reason Bowser needs to go, and soon. She is clearly incompetent.

NP. PP’s choice of words is unfortunate and reeks of lots of “isms” but this is the freaking zoo. It’s a family event. I imagine all families at the zoo tonight regardless of their race or SES expected this to be a reasonably safe place.

It sounds like the zoo needs to charge basic admission to Zoo Lights to prevent large groups of teenagers from wandering around and creating havoc.

And needs additional police / security presence on the Metro during holidays when there are large groups of unsupervised teens.
