I've never heard of only feeding once per day.

We fostered a beagle corgi mix who was overweight and even in that case, the vet with the rescue group said to still feed breakfast & dinner, just smaller portions.

I've had dogs that will gobble all their food upon it being given to them and dogs that let it sit and just graze on it throughout the day. Even with the grazers, their bowls were topped off in the evening with a cup added.

Feed the puppy three times a day, switching ton twice a day as he gets older.

got it. My last dog was a poodle and we joked she was anorexic. She was always slim to the end. We free fed her. She liked our food too, just wanted to maintain her French looks I guess?

Yes it is the breed.

My lab had to fast until 2 pm for a doctors appointment last week. He sat by his food bowl from 8 am until 1:30 when we left looking sad. Just like a pp he will eat however much food you will give him and wolf it down right away like it’s his last meal.

I would like to move him to once a day. When did you make this change or do you just feed them twice a day?

Why would you send any puppy away to a training center and why would you choose one that fed growing puppies only once a day?

Some people should not have dogs.

My poodle mixes have always been that way. The first two were rescue mixes, but they were free fed until we switched them to wet food when they were old and their teeth weren't as good. Our golden doodle also free feeds without too much of an issue. We give her too many treats, but that's on us.

I have always fed my dog twice a day. He’s 5 years old. He likes brown rice and minced chicken breast. I also leave kibble in a bowl for him to munch on in between. I have a dried chicken treat I also give him for a snack. His weight is fine.

3x a day until 1 year old and then twice a day for an adult dog... the puppy will not thrive unless he/ she gets enough calories.

I've never in my life met a dog who ate only 1x a day.

Free feeding is definitely an individual thing. Some can handle it and some can’t.

I’ve always done 2x/day for any dog who eats what you put down.

Ha - same here. our lab will eat whatever is put in front of her, no matter how often or how much. And each time it's like she's never been fed before.

Our little dog used to graze...a nibble here, a nibble there. Until we brought the lab home. the little one now eats like her life depended on it, which it sort of does.

Free-feeding: a majority of dogs will eat more than they should, and a lot will eat until they get sick. I have a picky dog, and if I free-feed, he does ends up just slightly overweight. I prefer not to do that.
