Falls Church City left because of desegregation. So they have their own schools, police, etc. So it is possible but the town has to be motivated and supportive of increased taxes.

I agree with OP - and I sent all three of my kids to private schools because they were very poor at meeting the needs of my bright kids as the years went on.

PP, most people in Montgomery County do not share your political views. If more people did share your political views, then candidates representing your political views might win some elections. The reason candidates representing your political views don't win any elections is that most voters don't want to vote for those candidates. That's democracy in action.

As the other PP said, you have some choices.

1. Try to persuade people to share your political views.
2. Resign yourself to the fact that most people don't share your political views.
3. Move.
4. Complain on DCUM.

IIUC, Reston (or rather the pro incorporation folks there) did not want to leave FFX County, but wanted to incorporate as a town, which would have left it in FFX but with local control over zoning, as in Vienna, Herndon, and yes, Clifton proper.

The politics were complicated because the existing Reston Association which has considerable influence over zoning (but not final authority) is voted upon by landowners, while an incorporated town would have votes of renters as well. So many in Reston who do not care for the County Govts approach to planning and zoning would find a Reston Town govt as bad or worse and prefer to work within the status quo governance structure.

Secession from a County for any reason has to be done with approval of the General Assembly in Richmond. Secession without the consent of the jurisdiction being seceded from (in this case FFX County) would not be looked open kindly in the General Assembly, because it would set a precedent that counties all around the state would fear. The main concern would be affluent sections of counties withdrawing from economically mixed counties essentially to avoid providing tax revenues to serve poorer areas (something that HAS happened in other parts of the country, but not in Virginia)

So you can accept FFX as it is. You can move. You can actually try to persuade people in Fairfax, including people unlike you in social class and race, of your positions. Or I suppose you can kvetch on DCUM.

It’s pretty obvious where OP is referring to. The Clifton area, which is the ONLY area in Fairfax that continues to vote R. It is the only precinct that voted for Stewart over Kaine. Which should NOT be seen as a good thing by anyone, but sure- miss “moderate” thinks it’s perfectly normal.
