I am the PP, It is a mix, I volunteer in the classroom is see the kids and talk to them. Some are legit AA who's families have been here for many years and some have parents that moved here from African nations that still have their accents, its a real mix.

+1 and don't forget the Caribbean families. Very, very diverse.

AA parent here, and I 100% get where you’re coming from. But I would only make a move like this if my daughter was wanting to. Also agree with others that you don’t necessarily need to leave MoCo. We are in Silver Spring and my kids have never been the only in any class or even an extra curricular activity. Finally, you may not even have to move for more diversity - look into the middle school magnets (some are test-in and some are lottery). All are at DCC and NEC schools that are diverse.

I would not mess a thing that's working, OP. Also, I attended an HBCU, and many of my friends previously attended predominantly white schools; it's not uncommon. Also, you could move and then find that the quality of education is different, or that bullying's a problem in her new cohort, or that all the kids have known each other for years and they're not very friendly to new kids--not saying these will definitely happen, but you never know. Also, not sure how PG would affect your commutes.

That said, if you definitely want to move, I agree with recs for staying in MoCo, but moving to eastern parts of the county near or in Silver Spring. There's also Shepherd Park nearby in DC, as another option.

Agree that the Einstein and Blair clusters may meet your needs. Lots of diversity in all its forms with academic challenge.

Jack & Jill isn’t the answer to everything. At a certain point any AA family should desire to be around their culture and ethnic group. It’s this backward thinking that has all those Black suburban kids confused in the first place. Trust me I interact with them daily. Not to mention Black boys raised in those have environments have little affinity for girls who resemble their moms so her daughter will go through dating growing pains....trust me.

I would not move East for fear for students who are ESOL and vastly behind. I’m a Black (ADOS not African American)teacher in MoCo and have taught several years in Title 1, high FARMS and ESOL schools. Your kid will not be the focus and unfortunately will be able to skate by without being challenged. Your daughter will be the only something, somewhere in life. The only Black person, the only woman, the only tall person, the only short person, the only light skin or dark skin person, etc.

Continue to keep her in Jack & Jill, church social groups and other organizations. Do not sacrifice a quality education for intangibles. Elementary is not that hard and though she’s liked a few boys she really shouldn’t be expecting to have a boyfriend in 5th grade, her focus should be her education. Wait until middle school for dates, hand holding etc.

MoCo HS with diversity but where she will be academically challenged:
-Blair
- BCC
-Einstein
-Quince Orchard
-Richard Montgomery
-Seneca Valley
-Springbrook

And given that Eastern MoCo is itself very geographically diverse, I’m not sure how someone couldn’t tell the difference between an urban neighborhood feeding into SSIMS and a suburban one feeding into White Oak, let alone the difference between SSIMS and Samuel Ogle MS in Bowie.

Perhaps you have not actually been to either eastern MoCo or any part of PG and are forming your assertion based on DCUM?
