$36 for most classmates. DD went to no fewer than 20 in 7th grade. Maybe if she went to fewer we would have spend more per gift.

No, it is not merely a birthday party for a 13 yr old.

It is and to act as if someone should pay more because it is something more is crazy. Nobody is running a shul at 15! Do not feel obligated to pay for the party.

Don’t attend if this is your attitude! Rude.

The Mitzvah kids absolutely run the service at every one I've been to (between family + 3 kids, more than 50).

I’m guessing you aren’t Jewish. For Jewish families, a bar or bat mitzvah means that their child can now be part of a minyan which is how Jews can hold a service and be called to the Torah to have an aliyah, a special blessing over the Torah. It means a lot and for many families to see their kids move into this part of the cycle of Jewish life is why so many celebrate.

+1

And, I don’t even think this means you have to give a large gift. $36 or $18 or even nothing is totally fine with us. But calling one of the major Jewish religious life cycle events a kid’s birthday party is pretty offensive.
