The "you need towing ability" argument is pretty ridiculous. How many of the people who drive these things actually regularly tow heavy loads? And if you cared so much about towing ability, you'd have a truck, because trucks have way better towing abilities.

Most of the people driving Yukons probably have no clue how to work the hitch. (And frankly, I don't WANT most of them on the road attempting to drive while towing a trailer...)

+1. My assumption is that the person is probably at least a little self centered and cares a lot about what other people think of them. We have three kids and a big dog and they fit fine in our sedan. We also have a minivan but it’s definitely our second choice car. The worst is when you see teens driving those enormous suvs. They just don’t have the skills and those cars are so much more deadly in a crash. I know someone whose children were killed when a teen in a large truck rear ended them and it just smashed their car like a can.

I assume they’re livery drivers.

Why is this? It seems like a nice, comfortable, capable car and one of the few non-minivan options if you have 3 kids or frequently need to drive ILs around.

A Suburban is a body on frame truck platform vs the unibody of a minivan/ highlander/ pilot SUV.

They weigh almost 1 TON more than a minivan, with more horsepower and less fuel efficient engines.

Sure they are bigger, but we can fit our 3 kids and sports equipment in a sedan. In fact two sedans driving six kids is MORE EFFICIENT than one Suburban driving those same 6 kids and equipment.

If you still need to carpool with all 6, get a normal size minivan or SUV and install a hitch cargo tray and water proof bag — even better keep the awful smelling sports equipment and mud outside of the passenger cabin.

People buy it for status, but it’s wasteful and completely unnecessary.

Oh and people who buy pickup trucks to commute to an office job, yes we hold them in contempt too.

1. Minivans suck.
2. No way anyone is stuffing 3 across in the backseat of a midsize sedan.
3. Look at the cavernous cargo space when the third row is folded up in a "normal-sized" SUV:

Minivans suck because chicks won't look at you if you're driving one? You ain't getting laid either way, pal. Minivans get better gas mileage, they have more cargo room (look it up), they're easier to park, and they're more affordable. The Yukons/Expeditions/Escalades are for delusional chumps.

Minivans can't tow. They're the car equivalent of sweatpants...ugly and a beacon of "I give up on life". And when you see a minivan on the beltway it's almost always going 90+ swerving between lanes with an angry and sexually-frustrated man behind the wheel.

If you actually need to tow, you would have a full-size truck. Their towing abilities are far better than those of SUVs.

Gaudy faux modesty -- they're $75,000 fully loaded -- and people buy the black ones to give illusion of a hired driver or security detail. Status-obsessed strivers.

interesting how only minivan drivers feel the need to come into every family vehicle thread and explain why they are so intelligent and superior because of the car they bought. insecure indeed...

NP. Most people who drive these monstrosities don't need to tow anything.

Your insecurity is showing.

Yup - we get 3 across in our sedan all the time. Even drove back and forth to the beach this summer with one of DS friends in the back and a full load of luggage.

It was fine.

No one needs these oversized tanks - they are for insecure people trying to prove something and it won't help your kid to make the Gonzaga or St Johns lacrosse team nor will you need to haul the team should he actually make it.

No one needs one to transport kids and gear and dogs etc., etc. They just want one. They are the people who take up more space in the world just because they can. And they want more.
