DC is a winger also, U14. I’ve read some things about how coaches often put their weaker players in this position. Is this true? Maybe it’s easier to hide those kids because as a PP mentioned, a lesser skilled team overall struggles with using space and finding players out wide, and thus the wingers don’t touch the ball as much?

I don’t get the preferred side issue. Dc’s team’s midfielders turn 360 so even if they have a preferred foot they are passing in all directions.

If he's U13, then the team has just transitioned to an 11v11 field. Depending on the level of the team, it may take longer for them to adapt to using the space available and finding the players out wide (that was a much shorter pass on a 9v9 field).
