I think the reason is sexism.
Carol is the best example I can think of. It’s an exquisite film with two extraordinary lead performances, but it took forever to get made and was largely shut out of awards despite its critical reception. Men still hold most of the power in film - in every respect.

But I’m a Cheerleader was great for its time but rewatch The L Word. It’s horrific.
