Developmentally normal? lol Nobody in our family would ever even think of doing any of that because we would be immediately smacked for it.

When my DD was in 1st grade she started reading the Junie B Jones books and her behavior got much worse. I banned the books.

Or alternatively (6:19 here again), instead of telling them generally and vaguely to clean their rooms, give them a reachable goal "In ten minutes see how many clothes you can put in the laundry basket."

Why did you ask them to clean their rooms at night? Sometimes we set ourselves up for failure, OP. Start a project like this in the morning when your kids are not already fried or wanting to relax.
