School age kids that I know love to hang key chain type items from their back packs. The ones with clips. We gave emoji key chains one year. Animal key chains another year. My kids’ favorite goody bag items was candy. Trading cards were a hit one year too. Football, Pokémon.

This is a cute idea. Kids love Band-Aids.

Best gifts?
Fancy decorated cookie from local baker in theme, always a hit and has a bit of a wow factor. The bakers here are amazing so they always look great.

Books for beginner readers are a good idea for that age. At a pool party we went to recently the goody bag included a themed drawstring sack for swim stuff, that got used all summer and continues to be used for swim lessons.
Books with activities are good too: paint by sticker books, books that teach you how to draw robots, dinosaurs etc.

When my kids were younger (3 maybe) they got water bottles with their names lettered on them. They were filled with more sweets than the kids needed but we used those water bottles for a couple years. I think you can order them with the kids' names on etsy.

A beautiful stick of rock candy in cellophane with a ribbon is the best favor I've seen at a kid's party.

Goody bags suck. The end.

For my son, the last party we gave cups that were Star Wars themed, a Snack Size Cheese It pack and a Couple pieces of candy. For my daughter, we gave something similar, a cup with a lemonade inside, few pieces of candy and some hair ties. Everything was recyclable and usable..(well, with the exception of the Cheese It and Candy wrappers....).

I can't tell you how many parents came up to me and thanked me!!

They were probably just doing their dues and being polite. Don’t read too much into it. The cups probably went in the trash.

We have done books a lot and they are always well received. Also $5 gift card to local ice cream or fro-yo shop. My son has also received a sports water bottle filled with candy that he loved. One item is usually going to be much better than a bag o' crap.

+1 million. Say no to junk.

Sure. Godmother offers to handle goody bags and then shows up at the party saying, I decided against goody bags for YOUR kid's party.

What kind of cups?

Not PP but a party themed thermos would be a great idea.

Eh, a Cars car isn’t junk. Neither is a Lego set! And OP clearly stated that no gift bag was not an option.
