OP here. There isn’t an adult bathroom in the building. I’ve had to go to the bathroom once during the tour and went to the one marked “GIRLS.” But this was before I had a potty training DS. He can’t really go alone because he often needs help. I don’t want him peeing all over the toilet, and the soap and dryer are out of reach without adult help.

Really? The teachers and daycare workers use bathrooms with no doors? So, if you come for a tour, you might see a teacher taking a dump or changing a tampon? Or you might see a male teacher taking a whizz in the urinal? What in the what?

Why so crass?

Yes, crass...but, not crass for a teacher to make a tee-tee in a urinal open to the hallway.

Oh, I’m sorry...I mean a tee-tee in an on the wall potty.

Lol! Priceless.

In this context? Sure.

This is about the only context in which I'd expect the bathroom to match the kid, and not the adult.

There was an older boy (maybe age 4-6?) at one of the open urinals being accompanied by his father and I felt weird in the cramped bathroom and not knowing if they thought I should be in there

As long as it was only the little boy and not the adult man using the urinal I don't think there was anything wrong with you using the boys bathroom. But anywhere else in public definitely take him into the women's or family one.

I’m assuming men could go in a stall to urinate. How many male teachers or daycare providers do you see in the 2-5 age group? Honestly I’ve seen zero in my tours of places.

My kid attended a school with a set up like this. It was rented church space.

The main doors from the hall to the bathroom had one of those slide locks. If an adult was using it, they waited until there were no children and locked that door. Not a huge deal.

So this is a bathroom for little ones? I see. Yes, it’s fine you went in to assist your son. But does he know how to use the bathroom by himself? If so, I maybe would try standing at the door to give him a bit more autonomy?

This is a strange set up for a daycare IMO. I understand the confusion!

Our daycare just has a bathroom per classroom, no genders assigned.

And I don't like that the soap is not within reach of little hands.

Heck, even IKEA has a toddler sink with soap!

Soap within reach of little hands often leads to big messes.

It’s seems like the vast majority are saying it’s fine to use the Boys, so I will continue to do that. And I agree that the soap should be in better reach. There are stepstools so I don’t blame the center for that, but my son just isn’t tall enough or have long enough arms to reach the soap yet.

Anonymous wrote:My 2 year old just started daycare and I usually take him to use the bathroom before we walk home. The problem is that the bathrooms are labeled Boy and Girl, and these are kind of cramped open bathrooms (no outer door). I have been taking him into the Boy bathroom in a stall (stalls have doors). There are also two open urinals right by the sinks. This center has kids up to age 4-5. I feel like it must be ok for me to help my son go to the bathroom... but I also feel odd doing so in this day and age. There was an older boy (maybe age 4-6?) at one of the open urinals being accompanied by his father and I felt weird in the cramped bathroom and not knowing if they thought I should be in there. In any other setting I would usually take him to a family bathroom and Women’s restroom, but they don’t have them at this center!

I’m not sure I understand why you aren’t taking him in the girls bathroom with you?

Because it is marked Girls and during the day, I’m sure the teachers take the boys to the Boys bathroom. You think it is weirder to take my son to the Boys bathroom than the Girls? This is why I am asking here! It’s confusing.
