My 6 year old DD and I have a similar problem. Ice cubes or alcohol applied on the bite immediately afterwards and before swelling begins help me a lot, but DD doesn't realize she has been bitten in time for me to use this technique on her.

For prevention, I just started using a Thermacell in our backyard this year and it has been AMAZING.

Could witch hazel or a baking soda paste do the same thing? I use thise for my dc's bites, which get huge. The baking soda paste especially brings down the swelling.

Our 5 year old got a lot of mosquito bite on leg at backyard, one area on his leg got red and swelling around the bites. We figured he may got infection by scratching or touched the dirty mud after reading the articles online. Since he didn’t have fever or pain we cleaned with rubbing alcohol, applied Neosporin antibiotic ointment, then covered the area using gauze pad with medical cloth tape, and no more swelling 2 days later. If you got swelling on the eye lid area better consult doctor, if could be more serious and need medical attention.

This happens to me too. I think it's because mosquitos, in addition to being blood-sucking menaces, are also pollinators. When they bite you, you may be injected with a little bit of that pollen. If you happen to be allergic to the pollen, you get the big welt.

Skeeter syndrome

In had this as a child and still as an adult. It is an allergic reaction.

Try to avoid bites by using a Deet spray and bathing after.

If you get bites take Claritin during the day and Benadryl at night. Chewables for children.

Apply cortisone topically.

Warm bath or warm compress. This works better then ice.
