Also, those neighbors are freaking crazy. There is nothing a 3rd grader could have done that would warrant this response.

I’m just not sure her mom is telling the truth. She might be twisting the events to upset OP. Sometimes people with insane takes on events aren’t the most reliable storytellers.

Why is everyone jumping on the OP? It sounds like her mom actually said, “remember your cat that lost its eye? It didn’t get injured in a cat fight like I said when you were little. Our neighbors shot your cat because they didn’t like you.” If that’s the case, OP isn’t making it all about herself. And it’s not necessarily the neighbors who are crazy. If they really did shoot a cat to get revenge on a 3rd grader, yeah, they’re nutballs. But mom’s who dredge up crap like this for no reason, in my experience, tend to be revisionists, changing the story to suit their moods.

It sounds like the mom wanted to hurt OP without being accused of being mean, so she brought up ancient history and tweaked the story. When OP gets upset, she can’t be mad at mom, because mom didn’t shoot the cat. The neighbors did. Even though anyone in their right mind can see that telling OP the neighbors shot her cat because she was a terrible child isn’t a good idea.

My mom used to pull crap like that with me. She’d “accidentally” tell me something hurtful someone said about me from years past. She was always either trying to bring me down or trying to drive a wedge between me and the other person.


This X100. Classic passive aggressive horse crap.

I would google the neighbors and see if they ended up escalating or are in jail somewhere. Kids who torture animals evolve into sociopaths. They could be serial killers now. Serial killers can go for years without being caught.

She didn’t just say OP went through an annoying phase. She basically told OP that she was so bad the neighbors shot her cat. Even if that were true, as a parent wouldn’t you want to shield your child from that? The only way I can imagine telling my children (even the senior who’s almost an adult) that the neighbor shot their cat because the neighbor dislikes the kid so much, is if I were warning my kids to stay away from the crazy neighbors with guns. I’d be reporting them to the police, animal control, posting on next door, getting a new security system, keeping my kids and pets inside, and probably trying to move. I would not be blaming my child for my neighbor’s violent and sadistic actions. The fact that OP’s mom isn’t outraged at the neighbors and is saying OP is responsible says OP’s mom is all kinds of crazy.

Thank you. This is what I was getting at. Yes, randomly within the past two years she brings things up and drops them on me out of nowhere. We weren't even talking about cats when she did thisn one.


PP here. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that. Your mom sounds unpleasant at best. I’d recommend thinking about how your interactions with her leave you feeling before deciding how much time to spend with her going forward. If she’s doing this regularly, and it’s increasing in frequency, you might need to pull back and establish clear boundaries. You’re not making her treat you this way or say things like that to you, but you are allowing it. Only you can decide if it’s worth it.
