I think recognizing sight words is a matter of memorizing specific combinations of letters. That is different from being able to spell and understanding how sounds are combined to create words. If he is in preK they’ll work on that this year and definitely in K. I would stop working on it at home and simply answer his questions as they arise.

If anything (and even this probably isn’t necessary) you might consider encouraging him to do activities that build his fine motor skills like coloring, stringing beads, and legos. That will help with learning to write down the road. My 5 year old struggles a bit with writing as his fine motor skills aren’t the best. His letter writing was pretty bad when he started preK as a young 4 and he got a lot better over the course of the year. Whatever you do keep it fun. As a PP mentioned putting pressure on kids too early can make them dislike school.
