Did you tour P street? That building is amazing. I find it odd you’d be unimpressed by it yet down with Burroughs building. Also I find it odd you didn’t apply to 8th street which would’ve simplified your commute etc. In general I’m not clear what you’re after - it’s like you’re too good for P street and it’s open air drug market but fine with Burroughs which may not have any aftercare (500/month for a college student may not even be possible) and also is near our very own target practice zone in Brookland.

What data did they have access to and then crunched? I’m skeptical. I also am not sure what ‘done well’ means - have friends? good PARCC scores? Got all 4s or higher on report cards?

They looked at data from all DCI feeders and MV kids were the lowest academic performance. I don't know much more than that.

They looked at the feeders' data in grades 3-5 -- kids taking the PARCC while at the feeders. The data wasn't about students' performance once they get to DCI. That isn't available publicly.

If you have not already go to a playdate at Burroughs, take a tour and chat with some teachers and administrators. Post on your neighborhood Google group or reach out to the PTO and ask to talk with a few families.

Is Burroughs a early action school? I know Bunker Hill is but for some reason i was thinking Burroughs isn't. Either way for Prk you have to have them on your lottery list to get a spot.
We had a great experience in dcps Prk and I know there are a LOT of long time neighborhood families. You might be surprised how welcoming, inclusive, academically challenging and great teachers are there. I Burroughs has a strong PTO and good networking with the other DCPS schools.
As for aftercare you might be able to get a spot as they are always adding programs and spots. Also, the YMCA and a few other programs offer off site aftercare and some parents swap childcare.

I know that MV does do discounting for aftercare based on income and if a financial hardship comes up. And you don't have to sign up for the full five days of aftercare, you can sign up for one day a week or every Tuesday and Thursday, etc.

OP here. Thanks - this is what is really driving my query. The unexpected financial challenge (job loss) is the real game changer for us. I'm not sure I would be asking this question without that. I realize we may never get another shot at MV or a like-quality public charter school. After considering all of the responses, I'm leaning towards keeping the MV slot, and hoping for the best. I think the financial challenge is just adding to my overall anxiety about the school transition - but you're right, it does make the neighborhood school very attractive.

Even if we couldn't get aftercare - it's close enough that we could probably find a college student or two to do pick/up and childcare for an hour or two a day. That would also mean I wouldn't have to drive to work - and could save lots of money on parking and gas.

MV if you want language immersion and want to stay where you are long term (i.e past elementary school).

If so and you go with your inbound, expect to move or go private in middle. It’s very unlikely your IB middle school is going to be a viable option in 5-6 years. Most middle class families bail in the upper elementary and not tracking to their IB middle.

No contest for us. We are choosing MV over our IB school because we want Spanish immersion and a more challenging curriculum , we want our DC to be among a large cohort of higher performing kids, and we love where we are and not interested in moving.

DCI middle school is getting better and better which will then translate to the high school getting better and better as the students continue on.

Very unlikely you will get another shot at MV. You can go to your IB school any day, anytime K and on.

PS Think a lot about how much you want Spanish and how much you want a sustainability focus + expeditionary learning for your kid(s). Those were compelling reasons for me to choose MV. If those are not important to you, your IB may be fine.
