My 2nd grader got lice in October and May. Both times, we went to the Potomac Lice Lady for lengthy professional combing. I actually had some in May... I cannot recommend having a professional do the combing when you and/or your kid has an infestation.
Following the Potomac Lice Lady's combing, we washed everything and then combed with a professional-grade comb nightly. I did mine in the shower as my husband was on travel. My 5 yo girl with short hair never got it either time.

Don’t use the OTC treatments. Both of my DDs had a horrible reaction to them a few years back. Combing and slathering with olive oil overnight is what worked.

LiceFree has been a god send for us. I have five girls with long hair and we can only comb so much. I really think it works.

Lice are really fragile. Just requires as others have said patience and a good comb. Lice happens sells a really good comb, believe you can order without having to pay for them to come to your house to do it themselves and teach you how (which, speaking from experience, is totally worth it!)/
