I like to think I do unconventional things as a way to keep our 27 year married sex life exciting and I certainly don’t consider myself a whore. If I did it with multiple partners I might think otherwise.

The agricultural revolution lead to the invention of property. Property leads to the question of inheritance which, in turn, made the question of paternity important. Since paternity isn't necessarily obvious, female sexuality had to be regulated.

Oppression of women wasn't confined to sexuality, and in the resulting patriarchal system, women have fewer opportunities to distinguish themselves and rise. Policing the sexual activity of other women was one lever of power available to them that allowed them to affect their relative social standing.

This is why being a whore is bad and it's something that's policed vigorously by women.

Every one wants to have sex with her (and you may spread your genes) biut you don't want to invest in a relationship with someone who likes sex and likes lots of partners, because what if you end up raising another male's kids?

Of course in the day of DNA, there are no secrets anymore so men can be held accountable for any babies they make. Will be interesting to see where that goes.....

NP. I don't think so. They are two different questions, and the usage is eliding from one definition of the word to another.


I think the fuzziness comes from the fact that OP sees guys accusing women who have a lot of sex as being whores, regardless of whether they have any of the other attributes that a strict definition would require.

Am I the first one to post that it is women who judge women much harsher than men judge women. However, as a man, I'd play with an easy girl - just wouldn't commit to her if I knew her history.

I don't think it's innate, as in some sort of hard-wiring. There are cultures (Botswana, Paraguay, Tanzania, etc.) which don't have this harsh judgment of women with multiple male partners.

However, given the anxiety about paternity of offspring (you generally know who the baby's mother is, but the father's identity can be lied about), you can see why the cultural prohibitions get passed on. Even in this thread, the first criticism was about the result of pregnancy.

We do have very effective means of contraception now, though.

Technically there's nothing wrong with it, but from an evolutionary perspective, the aversion towards "whores" seems to be rather innate. You can behave as you wish, but realize that you will be judged harshly by even the most open minded among us.

You think a single woman with an IUD is more likely to end up with kids that aren't financially supported by the father than if she gets married to a guy (who could die, get mentally or physically ill, be fired, get laid off, or just leave her and not pay child support)?
