I was approached once in my late teens and went in to meet with some agent. It was awful. At the time I was 5-11 and about 130lbs. They took all my measurements, told me my hips were too big, and they criticized my teeth and asked if I would consider braces. They were brusque and abrupt and it was me standing in a room with people staring at me and critiquing me.

I had the presence of mind to just get out of there and never look back, but I can remember being very shaken. Not a good scene.

My son models but he's only 10 and, obviously, a boy so it's a different kettle of fish entirely. For younger kids, it can teach some decent skills and he has made decent money for a kid over the past few years. BUT, as kids get older, I think the cons start to outweigh the pros.

I've seen girls as young as 8 turned away from a shoot for being "too fat." Like, if they went on vacation at grandmas and ate grandma's cookies and gained weight over the trip and then came back for a job. Terrible.

My DS won't be doing it for too much longer. Mostly because it's a huge time suck. It was interesting for a while but I'm totally over it. My DS would be fine to continue it occasionally but I'd rather stop completely.

Do NOT do this. My sister was scouted as a model as a teenager (we lived in NYC growing up). My parents discouraged it but she did it anyways during college. At first it was ok (more of a hobby and way to make money on break) but now it’s a huge issue. Eating disorder, body image issues. It has totally changed the sister I knew. Moral of the story: you can’t control what they do after 18 but I would say no while you can.

You really have to be in Manhattan to do this. And all the PPs are right - it's a tough world and hard on the body.
