The perp is serving 180 days on most of these offenses. It’s the max allowable under law, whether a liberal or conservative judge sentences him. He’s also mentally ill and with no fixed address. So, there are multiple possible solutions here, from changing the law on max penalties for serial offenses to redefining the what “threat to self and others” means when holding someone against their will in a psychiatric context.

Is this the maximum allowed on assault? Did he bargain down to this? I’m just trying to figure out how the sentences are so light.

Light? He touched someone’s stomach. The definition o kd assault here is stretched.

Brock Turner raped someone behind a dumpster and got 30 days.

What most posters on this board need to understand is “no papering.” That’s when police make an arrest, but prosecutors decline to bring a case. This happens a lot in DC. It’s a particular problem here because it’s the US Attorney’s Office that decides whether to prosecute or “paper” a crime. The USAO is not accountable to the people of DC. In fact US Attorneys are appointed by the president. DC residents have sought information in the past about why crimes are not prosecuted and it’s taken FOIA’s and Senate support to get what minimal, unacceptable levels of data that the USAO’s office keeps. So, one step to improving this mess is statehood for DC.

So the city council and mayor have absolutely no recourse? They never meet with theattorneys, there is zero cooperation, they cant make a fuss?,

I get your frustration, I really do. I used to spend a lot of time attending ANC meetings and public safety meetings with MPD.

Politically, it’s pointless for our mayor and councilmembers to request meetings with the USAO. Neither the federal executive nor judiciary branches are accountable to DC. The current US Attorney for DC is a Trump appointee and was assistant US Attorney for DC in the Bush administration. I’m sure she cares a lot about our Democrat Council and 90 percent Dem electorate. In all honesty, however, Capitol Hill resident and ANC commissioner Denise Krepp got some decent traction and oversight from Chuck Grassley (Judiciary) regarding oversight of sex offenders in DC. (Google “FOIA cakes.”)

I’m not saying that this isn’t an issue worth taking on or to be defeatist. I am saying that DC residents need to be a lot more sophisticated in their understanding of how our government works. To fix these systemic problems will take more than message board posts or angry emails to your councilmember.

Side note: Avoid Prince of Petworth. Dan aggregates news but doesn’t research it; some of what he posts is wrong, as in the “Dan’s Cafe is Closing” debcacle. He takes content from other bloggers without attribution, and his unmoderated comments fuel misinformation and trolling. (He also deletes any criticism of him or his reporting.)

This. So much this. With his massive ego, Dan considers himself the foremost authority on DC news when he does almost zero actual reporting, especially when it comes to crime (embedding an MPD tweet or taking an anonymous reader email and running it unverified is not "reporting"). And I would guarantee that the people who frequent that site often are some of the most misinformed people in DC, much like Fox News viewers are some of the most misinformed people in the entire country.

Again, what you want is statehood for DC. It’s the only way out of the USAO prosecuting local crimes. The Council and Mayor advocate for that as does Neighbors United for DC Statehood. Now our job is just to convince the residents of the existing 50 states that it’s insane that we can’t pass our own local laws without Congressional review, prosecute local crimes, control local parkland, etc. so that they lobby their congresscritters to vote for it. Oh yeah, and the Senate would have to vote for it, thus diluting its current power structure.

Yes the USAO is appointed by Trump. But the Obama Administration was 8 years and this also happened

If women mattered, the liberal council and our mayor would take this up. Or maybe women matter, but perps matter more to them?
