Anyone have a best guess as to when construction for any of the proposals might start? I commute from Germantown each day. My lease is up in March. I have an amazing deal, but I already sit in traffic 2-2.5 hours each day. What's the likelihood that I could squeeze another year out of this deal?

The governor is doing his best to have it start yesterday, but it's not going to work that way. And even if it did, there would be construction, which means delays. And then after that, there would be toll lanes, which would mean less delay for people who pay the toll, but just as much delay (if not more) for people who don't.

No deal is amazing if it requires you to sit in a car in traffic 2-2.5 hours each day. Find a different way to commute, or move.

I have a SN child, so car is my best way to commute. She goes to a school with specialized services in DC, and then I commute out to UMD. I couldn't afford the rent increase on our one bedroom in DC a few years ago, and an older couple offered me their rental property, which was a lifesaver. I'm tethered to the school, and with rent being what it is in DC these days, long commutes seem to be my only option.

It sounds like construction/traffic hell will probably start in the next 12 months, so I should probably start looking for studio apartments.

Germantown to DC to UMD by car is hell. If I were you, my absolutely immediately 100% highest priority would be finding a place to live that's near the school.

Why are you doing this commute? why do you have to stop at DC to get to College Park?

Where are you coming from? Virginia?

From Germantown, MD into DC and then out to UMD.

Exactly this. Widening is well proven NOT to ease traffic in the long run. It just moves the traffic around, and eventually more cars take that route and everyone is in traffic again.

LA has 10 lane free ways that are at a stand still a lot of the time.

The only thing proven to ease congestion: mass transport. More buses, more trains, less parking and highways lanes.
noy everyone can afford to live inside the beltway

So what? There can be more buses, more trains, less parking, and fewer highway lanes outside the Beltway too. In fact, there should be.

So you favor people spending 3 hours each way waiting on and riding busses and trains, instead of an hour in their car.

Nice.

No. I favor improving bus and train service, so that a bus/train trip doesn't take 3 hours each way vs 1 hour by car.

If we spent the amount of money on busses and trains that we currently spent on cars, the buses and trains would be amazing. We’d be healthier, safer, and the environment would be better off.

So vote for people who want to widen public transport EVERY WHERE. Widening highways has absolutely no proven record of improving congestion. Increasing access to public and mass transit does.

I think this is better - when it comes to getting traffic from VA north, they should use the ICC.

270 doesn't come near Silver spring. So I can guarantee you no takings.

Right. Is there space to widen 270 without takings? No. Is there space to widen 270 without takings near Silver Spring? Yes.

You clearly don’t understand American car culture. It’s the new horse.

This is the "we do it that way so we should keep doing it that way because we do it that way" argument.

Widening highways to fix congestion is throwing money down a hole. A lot of money. Time after time after time. Let's stop doing that.

You aren’t the governor.
