My dad had a terrible back (he had a spinal condition) and he was able to drive a minivan for years because of the seating and ease of getting in and out. Also because he could still do things like load groceries into the back of the minivan with his bad back (because you aren't lifting things in and out of a trunk), he was able to maintain independence and feel like he was contributing to the house longer (at that time, he was sharp and his feet and eyesight were fine, so he could drive).
When he finally ended up in a wheelchair, my mom took over driving, but the sliding door, trunk that made it easy to load his wheelchair, etc. meant he could still go places with her as the driver.
